Forces of Nature in old Bibles

Floods, earthquakes, conflagrations, swarms of locusts - the Bible is full of stories of the forces of nature, which were seen as God's punishment and judgement.

In the virtual book exhibition, we present selected illustrations from outstanding works of book art from the library of the Francke Foundations. They range from the Flood to the downfall of Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Egyptian plagues to the disturbing images of the Apocalypse.
